This unit introduces students to the genre of Rock Songs and its emergence in the 1950’s. Students explore how to create, perform and identify the four types of triad chords in 3 inversions (Root, 1st, 2nd Inversions) and how the diatonic chords (I-IV-V-vi) have been used to create music for over a hundred years as well as how the chords can be used to create melodies, harmonies, bass lines, and verse/chorus structures. Students learn how chords are used to create bass lines and melody as a type of chordal harmony. Everyone will take part in composing their own short song using techniques learned during the unit.
PERFORMANCE – students will perform a variety of music on the piano.
