You will make a copy of the document and go through all four steps to answer our unit questions. You will then publish the results of your research on your blogs.

Information essentielle

Your French internal examination is on Wednesday May 4. It will be testing your reading comprehension skills and your writing skills on our current topic “Au téléphone”.

You will be expected to read two different texts for comprehension and you will need to show how well you can describe past events in the passé composé.

Comment vous pouvez vous préparer

a) Practice

Practice your reading comprehension skills with the text entitled « Je passe ma vie au téléphone », and answer all the questions in this document.

b) Review

  1. Review all your notes in your handouts on our current topic and make sure you are able to:
    1. Conjugate verbs in the passé composé
    2. Describe events in a chronological order, using sequential connectors
    3. Express your opinion on a past weekend
    4. Make and receive a phone call
  2. Review the dialogues you have written in your “Practice & activity” booklets, as they will be useful models for essay writing and in your “Travaux pratiques de grammaire” workbooks you are encouraged to review all sentence structures in the passé composé.

c) Further practice online

Practice your vocabulary online with Conjuguemos French vocab : go to sections 1 and 2 of Chapter 9, practicing either with Flashcards, List of words or the activities linked to each section.

Practice your verb conjugation online with Conjuguemos French verbs : go to the second section entitled INDICATIVE MOOD: THE COMPOUND TENSES. Choose the passé composé (with AVOIR).

The texts you will be reading should be appropriate to your level of proficiency. You will not be expected to understand every single word in the texts but you will have to use various reading strategies to decode the texts quickly and understand their meanings.

Grade 8 – Je me présente

Bonjour la classe! Je me présente...

Our current unit “La famille” has allowed us to learn how to describe and characterize family members. Now, your task is to produce a video presentation about yourself, your family, various aspects of your personality including preferences and wishes. You will be using a range of adjectives learned so far and will follow the template provided here. Your template will also include a Task Specific Clarification sheet and deadlines for completion of your project.

In order to create a convincing presentation, you are encouraged to refer to these tips.

Bonjour la classe et bienvenue à tous!

This year, our first unit is entitled “La famille”. We will learn, among other things, the vocabulary for family relationships and for describing and characterizing people. We will also reflect on what constitutes a family and why it is important to understand the family value systems of another culture.

Allons-y!

Let’s log in to our online textbooks and go to chapter 7 “La famille”. There you will be able to read, listen to and practice the conversation taking place between Thuy and Isabelle.

  1. Click on the “Book Pages” tab and select MISE EN TRAIN. Sympa, la famille! section on page 200-202. Go through all sections from Stratégie to number 8. Practice your listening skills by listening to all dialogues. (Click on the sound button in each section.) Repeat after each dialogue to practice your speaking skills. Make sure you have a good understanding of the story before starting the exercises. You may want to listen one more time to the whole episode while following with the text by clicking on the “Play all” button above Activités.
  2. Go to the Activités menu and do activities 1 to 5. Save your answers on the Cahier électronique.Post all your answers to the above exercises on your blogs under the unit title La famille. You may copy and paste your answers directly on your blogs or post screen shots of your answers. You are expected to write full sentences as much as possible.
  3. If you have completed all exercises before the end of your first French double lesson, you may want to find out what happens next in the story. This time, you need to go back to the “Home” button and click on the video tab. You can watch both the “Mise en train” and “Suite” episodes.

Regardez la vidéo “Ca vous plaît?” et faites les exercices 1 à 8 en ligne. Attention ! La première vidéo n’a pas de son (= has no sound/is mute). Faites d’abord l’exercice 1 et ensuite vous allez pouvoir regarder la vidéo une deuxième fois avec le son (= with sound). Bonne chance!

Grade 8 – French internal exam preparation

As mentioned earlier, this year’s Grade 8 French internal examination on May 5th will be based on our topic “Au téléphone”.  You will have two reading selections and two written tasks to complete.

What you need to know about your written tasks and how you can prepare yourselves:

1) In your first written task you will need to recount an eventful weekend in the passé composé.

2) In your second written task you will write a telephone conversation during which your friend shares a confidence, you provide some advice and encouraging words.

What should you review?

You should go over all your notes of chapter 9 and review the following:

  • how to conjugate verbs in the passé composé.
  • how to describe events in a sequential order, using specific connectors.
  • how to express your opinion on your weekend.
  • how to make and receive a phone call.
  • how to share a confidence, give advice and words of encouragement.

In class, we will be reading a text about the use of the telephone and we will apply reading strategies that you will be able to put into practice during your examination. It will be important to pay attention and take notes.

Grade 8 Je me présente

Task:

You will produce a recorded oral presentation entitled “Je me présente”, in which you will introduce yourself, your family, your preferences, your classmates and various aspects of your personality, using a variety of adjectives learned in our unit to describe and characterize.

  1. To write your script, you will follow the format suggested in this document. Check your spelling with the spelling and grammar tools.
  2. Once your script is completed, you will work on your visual support.

Visuals can be created in PowerPoint or Keynote format. You may want to create a presentation directly in Google docs. or upload your slides to iMovie. You should also include your recorded script to either tool and synchronize your speech with your visuals.

A few tips regarding the use of visuals:

They should enhance your presentation and help your audience understand what you are presenting.

  • Use images that are relevant and specific.
  • Your images should be of a certain size: do not use images that are of a too low resolution, as they become pixelated when enlarged.
  • Do not include too much text, only keywords or headings in a big enough font.
  • Keep the background simple so as not to distract your audience from your main ideas.
  • Make sure you cite your sources in your bibliography at the end of your presentation, if you are using images from the Internet.

Final recommendations:

  1. Make your presentation dynamic by including a variety of visuals so that your whole narration is not done over one static image.

  2. Give a convincing presentation about yourself through a lively delivery of your script and avoid reading without expression.

  3. Practice reading your script; make sure you know how to pronounce all vocabulary fluently.

Timeline:

Class time : Friday October 3rd double lesson and Monday October 6th single lesson

Work at home if more time is needed.

Make sure you have either shared your recorded presentation/iMovie with me or sent it to me as an attachment by the end of the day on Wednesday October 8.

Grade 8 French Exam Revision

As explained in class, your exam on May 2nd will include the following:
1) A reading comprehension text on the use of cellphones (unprepared task)
2) A second reading comprehension task on fashion, “La mode: importante ou perte de temps” (prepared)
3) A writing task on your own use of cellphones (prepared).

You are encouraged to see me if you have any questions regarding your preparation. Please read the feedback comments I have written on your Google doc. paragraphs on cellphones, make corrections accordingly and resubmit your paragraphs.

Writing activities

Log in to your online textbooks and go to chapter 7 “La famille”.

In Book Pages, click on the drop-down menu next to Chapitre 7 and select the second Grammaire supplémentaire entry, which corresponds to 2ème Etape.

You will do exercises on Describing and characterizing people: exercises 5 to 9 included.

Post all your answers to the above exercises on your blogs: either copy and paste directly on your blogs or post screen shots of your answers. You are expected to write full sentences as much as possible.

Deadline: Next French class on Tuesday September 17.
