InS9: Psychology – Classical Conditioning and Advertizing

  • How do we learn?
  • What has created your personality?
  • How do you know that you have free will?

Classical Conditioning – Ivan Pavlov

Ok that was a lot of information. Here’s a simpler version:

classical-conditioning

As a group, come up with a definition of the following:

  • Classical Conditioning
  • Unconditioned Response
  • Conditioned Stimulus
  • Conditioned Response

Now, let’s look over the first three questions again.

Next: Handout

In groups of 2: Find one commercial that uses classical conditioning. Explain what tactics are used to change your attitude towards their product.

Grade 8: Global Issues

Continuing our discussion on global issues ,we will watch a clip of Luc Besson’s Home. (start at 21:00)

As you watch the video, take notes on:

  • how humans have used nature to suit their needs
  • the environmental issues raised in the movie
  • steps of food production
  • a list of global issues discussed in the clip

Discussion: How are these issues interrelated?

Then:

In groups of 2 or 3, you will choose a global issue discussed in the video and do some quick research on it. Find some simple sources and at least one infographic.

You will then have 15 minutes, no more, to  create a presentation on your global issue and explain how it’s impact is being felt worldwide.

This time, I will choose your method of presentation…… (be afraid!)

InS10: Empires

Last week, we began our discussion on Imperialism and the Motives for Imperialism.

Discuss: How do we know historical events to be true?

Today, we will read Santha Rama Rau’s By Any other name.

Then, answer the By Any Other Name Questions.

Next, we will read George Orwell’s story Shooting an Elephant

As you read, highlight and annotate passages:

  •  you feel summarize the reading.
  • that have a link to Rama Rau’s Story
  • passages that prove or disprove  the motives for Imperialism reading.
  • any passages you find interesting, questionable or noteworthy.

We will then have a socratic seminar

If we have time, we will read Read White Man’s Burden by Rudyard Kipling, and answer the following questions.

(1) According to Kipling what was the “White Man’s Burden”?

(2) What reward did Kipling suggest the “White Man” gets for carrying his “burden”?

Discuss

Next, we will read Burmese Days, by George Orwell, looking at the differing perspectives on imperialism.  What does Flory see and what does Dr. Veraswami see?

Discuss.
