Work for Monday, March 9th

Hi guys,

I will be absent today. Here is the work to be done.

Gr 12 Geo, Periods 5 and 6

  • We will do the presentations on consumer culture at the beginning of next class
  • Read the chapter on Sociocultural Interactions in Guinness 168-180, I think or Codrington 632 to 640 (longer but better, more detailed) and create an outline for the following IB type essay: Examine the impact of cultural diffusion on one indigenous and remote society through the influence of international interactions.
  • Due next class

Grade 8C – InS, Period 8

Leave the homework on my desk, or email it to me.

  • Tomorrow morning we will go down to Motomachi to complete the third part of the  Yokohama Globalization project.
  • Today, you need to devise a plan to collect all the necessary information in under an hour. 
    • Make groups of 3 or 4
    • Plan a route for each member, we will only cover the main shopping street, from the Starbucks to the first traffic light, moving West. 
    • Create a data collection sheet so that each member will collect similar data (eg: name of store, location, product, country of origin etc. See project description for details.)
    • You will be given clipboards and a Surveyor’s Wheel to measure distance.

IB HL: Consumerism and Culture

IB Outcome: Describe the role of TNCs and the media in spreading consumer culture.

Part 1:

We will read together Noreen Janus’s text in Guinness p. 158

Then, as yo watch the videos:

  • Define Marketing
  • Define Brand and Branding
  • Explain how can a TNC commodify a culture?
  • What historical events have lead to the rise of the Consumer Culture?

Part 2: Select two different branded commodities and examine the spatial and temporal pattern of adoption on a global scale.

In groups:

Using Codrington p. 622 to 625 and Guinness p. 161 to 166

Each group will answer the following questions using Coca-Cola or McDonald’s as a case study:

  1. Give an example of reverse adaptation
  2. Give an example of adoption
  3. Give an example of adaptation
  4. Describe your company’s brand identity and brand image
  5. List the various spatial pattern of adoption of your company on a global scale. Consider physical, economic and social factors.
  6. Create a timeline listing the various temporal pattern of adoption of your company on a global scale. Consider physical, economic and social factors.

You will present your findings to the rest of the class.

IB 11: The Value of Oceans

IB Requirement: Identify the biotic and abiotic resources of continental shelves, oceans and ocean floor deposits.

As you watch one of the videos:

  • Consider the various needs oceans fulfil for humans and the Earth as a whole.
  • Consider the need for a global agreement on the preservation of oceans.
  • Consider the difficulties in regulating oceans.

Discuss: 

Explain the 3 ways that natural resources can be valued. (How van you measure it’s worth?)
Explain why we fail to account for many the oceans values
Explain the problems that we cause by failing to accurately account for the ocean’s value

Then:

1. Read this article on ocean resources

2. Draw a sketch map identifying the biotic and abiotic resources of continental shelves, oceans and ocean floor deposits.

  • Annotate your sketch map showing the main areas where various types of fishing, tourism and mining occurs in the ocean.
  • Color code the biotic and abiotic resources.

3. Rank the top 5 most valuable resources of oceans and justify your answers.
Discuss: 

Explain the 3 ways that natural resources can be valued. (How van you measure it’s worth?)
Explain why we fail to account for many the oceans values
Explain the problems that we cause by failing to accurately account for the ocean’s value

4. We will watch a part of The End of the Line. As we watch, consider this IB learning outcome:

Examine the spatial and temporal consequences of overfishing.

The school’s library has a DVD copy of the film. It would be a good idea for you to watch the entire movie before this unit is over.

  • Make sure you have shared your previous homework with me.
  • You have both periods to complete this exercise. The substitute teacher will give you a handout to help you in your outline plan.
  • Due at the beginning of next class.
