InS 9: Preparation for next week’s InS High School Exam

Here is your study guide for the exam

You have today’s class to research all the information you will need to formulate your arguments during the exam.


  • The positive and negative outcomes of hosting the 2020 Olympics
  • The outcomes that came after the 1964 and 1998 Olympics and other major sporting events
  • Have strong examples to support your arguments

InS 9: Sports Tourism

We have discussed the benefits and drawbacks of tourism, and looked at the history of the Olympic games.

Major sporting events have always had their shares of controversy.

—In groups, you will create a short presentation describing a controversy surrounding an upcoming major sporting event.

—Create a 5 (max) minute PowerPoint presentation (10 slides max) describing:

  • The reason your city wanted to host the event
  • The benefits of hosting the event
  • The drawbacks of hosting the event
  • The main lines of the controversy
  • Answer these questions:
    • Should the event still take place?
    • Would you still patronize the event?
  • —The slides may not contain more than 5 words each. They should be used solely as visual aids and prompts, not essay pages.
  • You may not read from a piece of paper or laptop either. All information must be in your own words.
  • Be ready to answer questions from your peers.

InS 9 : Intro to Tourism

We will be looking at trends, benefits and drawbacks in tourism today.

Exercise 1:

Download the UNWTO Tourism Highlights 2015 and answer the following questions:

  1. What were the top three countries in terms in international arrivals in 2014
  2. What were the top three countries in terms of international receipts in 2014?
  3. Explain the difference in patterns depicted by your answers of question 1 and 2.
  4. Describe the recent trends of tourism in Africa.
  5. Describe the changes in international tourist arrivals between 1950 and 2010. (p.14)
  6. In your opinion, why has tourism increased since the 1950s?

  5. One management strategies put in place by local people
