A rather big topic that came up for discussion in our classroom this week was in regards to the seating arrangements in class. Since the start of our semester in August and up to this week in December, students have had ‘free seating’ in class; they could choose to sit at any of the tables (standard tables, low tables, or counter tops) in the classroom. While they still can choose to sit at the low table or the counter top, the children were intent on settling the dispute as to whether or not they should get assigned seats. First we collected the different suggestions on what sort of seating arrangement may work for them. Then they each put in a vote; however, they needed to support their choice with a valid reason as to why they felt that we should have this type of arrangement.
Here is a photo slideshow: a photo with the results in the form of a bar graph, and photos of every post-it note with each student’s valid argument.
