We were very fortunate to have had Ms.Harumi Kobayashi, our school’s new lab technician, read the story, The Little Fir Tree, in Japanese to our Grade 3 classes. The Japanese title is “Chiisana Momi no Ki”.
Having the children listen to stories told in different languages is one way we like to celebrate the language of the story and Mother Tongue. The children are encouraged to notice the pictures and the oral emphasis to make meaning from their listening experience.
The children thoroughly enjoyed the variations that Harumi-san gave to her reading of the story: different rhythms, volume, pace, intonation, and even singing the songs towards the end of the book. Thank you very much Harumi-san!
