Romeo & Juliet 1.2 – 1.4 #2

2. We spend a bit more time with Romeo through the rest of Act One. What is his mood, and what is causing it? Be specific and quote from the text.

  1. Romeo starts off in a sad, depressed mood. He stays alone most of the time and he shuts himself off from the outside world. The cause of his depression is the girl who I thought was Juliet, but a girl named Rosaline. Romeo is depressed because Rosaline does not love him back the way he loves her and because Rosaline will not sleep with him.

  2. Romeo is lonely and depressed the first time he is introduced. This is caused by the fact that his lover does not love him back, at all. You can see that he is depressed and lonely because he never talks to anyone, not only that but he also says, ” Griefs of mine own lie heavy in my breast,” which implies that as well. Romeo’s lover does not love him back as it states in the text that he does have a lover, ” In sadness, cousin, I do love a woman,” which again implies that he is sad, but he is also in love, so by this it can be said that he is in love. It can be said that his lover does not love him back, ” She’ll not be hit With Cupid’s arrow: she hath Dian’s wit,” which implies that she doesn’t notice Romeo at all.

    • I think yours is very informative, and related to the question. What i liked most about your response is the way you used quotes good job.

      • But do you argree, disagree, have anything to add or want to ask a question? We’re aiming for conversation here, rather than assessment. But yes, the use of quotations is great, as it provides very specific evidence to support the ideas expressed. A good model to follow.

  3. I strongly agree with your argument and you’ve really said all I could think of about this topic. You presented your ideas very well and supported with good evidence from the text. Good job~

  4. When Romeo is first introduced, his mood was depressed, which is caused by the fact that his lover does not love him back. “Tut, I have lost myself. I am not here. This is not Romeo. He’s some other where.” this implies that he’s is depressed, “Out of her favor, where I am in love.” this implies that the cause of his depression is due to the fact that his love dose not love him back. But then, by the end of Act 2 of the Montague’s party, when Romeo meets his love, Juliet, his mood changes in to being enthusiastic. “

    • Indeed. Is the only thing bothering him the fact that Rosaline won’t be wooed? That’s certainly the biggest thing on his mind, but is there anything else contributing to his mood?

  5. The first time Romeo is introduced, he is depressed and does not interact with the other characters as much. The reason is because Rosaline, a woman that Romeo loves does not love him back. Romeo knows she will not sleep with him. Benvolio tries to tell Romeo that there are woman that are more beautiful than Rosaline but Romeo does not agree.
