Kindergarten’s New Opportunity Day

As the children become more invested in their inquiry into how ‘Personal journeys show the way that people change and can lead to new opportunities‘ their discussions have gradually become personal. It also showcased their ability to share ideas in a group, listen to each other, develop new ideas, solve problems peacefully and collaborate on planning projects. We have been privileged to witness their development and progress and we are proud to have been a part of their learning journeys this year.

It is our new opportunity, we have to do everything by ourselves.

The children brainstormed ideas of what are some of the possibilities for this new opportunity.

As we continued our discussions over weeks of preparation, the ideas fused and developed. We finally narrowed down our options: pool party, breakfast at school, dance party, BBQ, watch a movie and bring stuffed animals to school. The children decided to do a blind vote (something they learned from Gr. 3) and the result was Pool party and watch a movie at school. Once this was decided, it was time to plan. Ingredients were listed out and each child volunteered to bring one or two ingredients. The children drew upon their prior experience from celebration of learning earlier in the year. They thought of everything from food, blow up pool, cutleries and utensils to movies for the afternoon when they will be tired and need a rest.

Pizza received the overwhelming votes. The children wrote a letter to Mr. Darren, whom the children think is an expert on making pizza, asking for help. They worked out that pizza dough need to be made ahead of time, thus a schedule was made (see picture above).  Mr. Darren, helped with making pizza dough and baking four trays of pizzas in the kitchen oven.

At the end of the day, we wonder what the children think of their New Opportunity so we posed these questions for them to reflect upon:

What do you think about today?

Lubna   It was so fun to make pizza dough. It’s so yummy to eat pizza. It’s a best day today. I like the pool because we all splash together. We all splash Mr. Claydon and Ms. May. I splash everyone. I want to do that every time.

Yanchuan    It was diff to splash because  different people run.

‘It’s new opportunity day today!!’

The children had an amazing day today. There are many new learning moments throughout the day. The children showed great collaboration skills, responsibility and enthusiasm.

First we kneaded our dough to make bread. It was messy but was worth the effort as the bread came out really delicious. They had a great time playing with water and making lemonade. Please ask your child about their experience today.

“It is our responsibility”

As the children become more invested in their inquiry into how ‘Personal journeys show the way that people change and can lead to new opportunities‘ as their discussions have gradually become personal. It also showcased their ability to share ideas in a group, listen to each other, develop new ideas, solve problems peacefully and collaborate on planning projects. We have been privileged to witness their development and progress and we are proud to have been a part of their learning journeys this year. One child suggested that they should ask the adults to do what needed to be done. Another child responded with determination, “It is our new opportunity, it’s ours and not the teachers’ or other people so it is our responsibility to do it.”

We posed a few questions to generate ideas:  What have you learned in Kindergarten?

Draw nice letters.

Learned to read.

Not just have fun we got to be kind to our parents and help other people.

Learned how to write and how to climb.

I’ve learned different kind of words in books.

I can spell words.

(I learned) how to make shows.

I learned to grow snap peas and I learned how to get the toadlets food.

I learned how to make friends.

I learned magic ‘e’.

Play magic number

Run faster to play tag.

I do good things. Making friends.

I couldn’t do clean up but I can do it clean up now.

I learned how to be a good listener.

What would you like to do that you have never done before?

Go on field trip.

Go see a farm.

Swimming with the whole class in a pool.

Do experiment.

Make cupcake.

Paint everyone in class.

See far away (telescope).

Learn to do magic.

Make paper.

Race bicycles.

Clean the world.

Learn how to make fire.

Learn how to make Chemistries.

Do a tour for ELC.

As we continued our discussions over weeks of preparation, the ideas fused and developed. We finally narrowed down our options: Pool/Water day, Racing day, Barbecue day, Tour for ELC, Cooking, Baking bread. We decided to take a survey to make our final decision. Pool/Water day received 123 votes and Barbecue day received 98 votes. Once our new opportunity has been decided it was time to plan. The children wrote a letter to Mrs. Cancemi to borrow the ELC’s grill. They also wrote four letters to ask school caretakers to bring over the grill to KS. They came up with the menu for their barbecue. “Where do we get our food?” one child asked. “We can bring some from home” was an answer that everyone agreed with. Ingredients were listed out and each child volunteered to bring one or two ingredients. The children drew upon their prior experience of putting on a restaurant earlier in the year. They thought of everything from cutleries and utensils, charcoal, juicer and grill to lighter and movies for the afternoon when they will be tired and need a rest.

We are very excited about our New Opportunity Day.

“I’m so excited!”

Through the process of Making thinking visible routine, Compass, we are able to discuss and anticipate the upcoming outing at Enza sweet potato farm and picnic at Shikinomori Koen. While the children are extremely excited, they also voice some concerns and suggestions during the meeting.

Things that worry us:

I’m worried that the bus might not know where the school is.

I don’t know where the farm?

What if the bus doesn’t know where the farm is?

If raining and storm and tornado coming. Tornado is going up. Storm is going to here.

What if the farm is closed?

Bad guys?

No sweet potatoes.

What we need to know:

How does it (sweet potato) grow?

Why are they called ‘sweet potatoes’?

Why do they have spots on the skin?

Is it stinky?

Which way do we go to the farm? North, South East, West.

How to dig?

Who owns the farm?  Is he a farmer?

Any animals at the farm?

What excites us:

I like sweet potato. I like to eat.

Some of our moms or dads are going to come.

Get to pull out sweet potato.

I want 10 sweet potatoes.

I like farm because you can dig.

I’ve never been to a farm.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Our suggestions:

We need a map.

Hide from bad guys.

We go to field trip we can find out (how to dig and about sweet potato).

Make a sign says ‘No bad guys’.

If bad guys eat sweet potato we can grow it again.

Go home if it rains.

We can clean it (sweet potato) and eat it.

Give to cafeteria, others, G1, G2 or G3.

When we go we can check to see if our ideas are right or wrong.

We can give them as presents.

We listen to farmer to know what to do.

We can dig deep then pull.

We can use shovel and pull sweet potatoes.
