Grade 9 Typography Experiments

Grade 9 students have begun their graphic design unit and were asked to create a composition using only the letters of their name. They selected whether to use Photoshop or Illustrator. The purpose of the task was for them to become familiar with fonts, layout as well as some of the text editing tools. The task was done without any instruction on the teacher’s part, except for the information below.

Task: What Type Are You? (60mins)
Using Photoshop or Illustrator, create a document/composition using only the letters of your name.
-You should experiment with various fonts.
-You should experiment with size.
-You should experiment with rotation, overlapping and/or mirroring.
-You should experiment with kerning etc.
-You should limit your colour palette, but may use colour in any way you see fit.
-You should consider layout, spacing and/or white space.
-Your composition should have an attractive balance.
-You may use repetition.
-You may play with orientation.
-You may play with opacity.

Grade 9 students have completed their unit on painting. They chose whether to depict a still life or a landscape, as well as what type of painting techniques to approach. Grade 8 Character Creations

Grade 8 work has been uploaded to Flickr for viewing. Students were assigned a font to research in order to develop a character that personifies that font. Stereotypes were examined with discussions being held if that aided or hindered the artistic process and creation. Students used Adobe Illustrator’s live trace option to digitise their work. Grade 9 Pastel Drawings

Grade 9 Art students have completed their pastel drawings. Their compositions involved landscapes and students selected whether to use soft or oil pastel. Most work is sized approximately 65cm x 45cm. View the slideshow below or directly through Flickr here.

Grade 10 Figurative Work

Grade 10 students have spent several weeks representing the human form. Focus was placed on measuring, accuracy and foreshortening. Students progressed from drawing in marker, to pencil, pastel and paint, as well as developing their speed and gradually increasing in scale. As part of their summative project, students depicted poses in a medium of their choice and were encouraged to experiment. View their work below or via Flickr here. Most of the artworks contained in this set were at least 70cm large.

Glitched Photography

This post mainly focuses on technology, but I thought I’d share it here as well. Before starting our second units in grade 7 and 8 Tech, I decided to incorporate a little bit of art and technology. We made some glitched photography, which you can see below or directly through Flickr here. I’ve blogged about this before on my personal blog, where there is a great PBS OffBook video and a link to a tutorial. Basically, you open your photo in text edit and start corrupting the file by deleting, inserting, copying and adding text. Give it a try. It doesn’t take long and the students enjoyed it.
