Only A Thousand-Yen

There I sat, looking at the thousand yen.
Tunnel vision, awareness, silence.
Beige paper with blue ink,
a crease down the middle.

The infinite ways I could spend this bill.
Snacks, drinks, karaoke, fun.
But then again…dinner, movies, date, love.

A piece of paper created to represent.
Hideyo Noguchi, influential medical discovery.
Higuchi Ichiyo, prominent female writer
Fukuzawa Yukichi, founder of modern Japan.

What if banknotes weren’t how people were reflected
on the true human values
rather than a price list.
